RSPON – In commemoration of World Hypertension Day (May 17) and National Elderly Day (May 29), Prof. Dr. dr. Mahar Mardjono National Brain Center Hospital Jakarta held patient and family education on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at the Regular Polyclinic, 2nd Floor, Building A, by inviting expert speakers from Prof. Dr. dr. Mahar Mardjono National Brain Center Hospital Jakarta, namely: dr. Nani Oktavia, Sp.PD who discussed "Hypertension and Aging: Why are the Elderly Vulnerable and How to Deal with It?", Novita Sabuluntika, S.Gz who discussed "Managing Diet and Physical Activity for the Elderly with Hypertension", and apt. Yuli Yulfrida, S.Farm. which will discuss "Hypertension in the Elderly: Medication Management and the Importance of Adherence to Treatment. The main topic in this education is about why the elderly are susceptible to hypertension. As we age, the body experiences various changes such as: blood vessels become stiffer and narrower, kidney and heart function can decline, inactive lifestyle, unhealthy diet, and stress also play a role. It is estimated that more than 60% of the elderly experience hypertension. (Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, 2019). Therefore, it is very important for patients and families to recognize the prevention and control of hypertension. The discussion of the material in this education aims for patients and families to be able to recognize the symptoms of hypertension quickly, so that doctors can make the right diagnosis and proper management can prevent complications. Prevention and control of hypertension can be reduced by reducing salt consumption, avoiding alcoholic beverages, doing regular physical activities such as walking or exercising 30 minutes per day at least 5 times a week, maintaining ideal body weight, not smoking and avoiding cigarette smoke, and not forgetting a diet with balanced nutrition.
